Universal Design Bathroom in Des Plaines, Illinois

Our project began by reimagining an outdated, inaccessible bathroom into one that would be used by the family for years to come. The idea of Universal Design boils down to the ability for anyone, of any age, with any mobility level to be able to comfortably and successfully use the bathroom with little to no assistance.

We replaced the original shower with a walk-in custom tile shower. The low entry offers ease-of-access while creating a sense of luxury with the open air concept and rain showerhead. Because the floor is angled toward the drain, there is no concern for water to escape the shower. Notice the niche - it provides access to soaps and shampoos within close reach. A handheld shower head with diverter on the inner wall, next to the shower bench gives the user the ability to wash off while sitting.

The freestanding bathtub provides a soaking area after a long day of work or play. The chandelier above the tub give the user plenty of lighting while they relax. To complete the bathroom, our homeowner's vanity was custom designed to allow the user to sit while practicing their morning and evening routine. The opening under the counter adjacent to the sink allows the user to sit while doing their hair or makeup.
